Delicious Surprise

Delicious Surprise

Considered to be her "comeback" (that's what they call it in Nashville when you resurface after taking half a decade off from recording full-length albums), Jo Dee Messina's Delicious Surprise sounds like she hasn't skipped a beat since 2000's Burn. The innuendo-free "Not Going Down" introduces Delicious Surprise with Messina's big and brazen voice belting out a triumphant twang-pop hit about standing strong when life deals you a hand of low cards. Similarly, the poignant "It Gets Better" continues along with the same theme, but she co-wrote this power ballad after her experience with rehab and you can really hear it in her soaring emotion and confessional lyrics, just as you can with the slightly melodramatic but harmonious "Love Is Not Enough." Things get a little redneck-rowdy à la Gretchen Wilson with the sassy, "My Give a Damn's Busted." The song lacks the very edge it's going for, though it's still pretty funny and catchy as hell.
