Tu m'aimes-tu

Tu m'aimes-tu

Francophone singer/songwriter Richard Desjardins sticks to his own spare piano accompaniment on this mesmerizing and poetic 1990 album. Desjardins imagines an almost primeval love in "Nataq," speak-singing over rumbling chords and through long, silent pauses. But his rough-hewn voice also describes gritty streets and suburbs where sad men sleep in cars ("…Et j'ai couché dans mon char") and desperately seek normalcy ("Le bon gars"). He turns to the acoustic guitar on a few songs, including the deeply tender, oft-covered gem "Quand j'aime une fois j'aime pour toujours."
