By Racer's for F1 Fans

I've been an F1 fan since my first race in Long Beach 1977. I instantly found the sport captivating. I've traveled to many races over the years, but now I just watch everything I can on TV. I was losing interest a few years ago and almost gave up following the series.

The last couple of years has rekindled my passion for the sport. F1TV is a vast improvement over any network coverage in the USA. Picture and sound quality are top notch as expected. I had a slight issue signing in at first, but it's been resolved and streaming experience worked flawlessly for Bahrain. The pre and post race shows are exactly what I want available as an F1 fan. Will's grid walk talking about the cars is what I've been missing all these years...

I signed up in time to watch the Bahrain testing sessions. The in depth information provided by Sam Collins and others make this a very worthwhile subscription for me. I'll never go without F1TV again. I LOVE IT!

Very expensive, very unreliable, overall heartbreakingly disappointing and frustrating

I am in love with this sport. It’s why I keep paying for this service. It’s my only access to the sport as an American. Between the atrocious quality issues most of the time, the frequency of error codes and connection disruptions, and the infrequency of having the honor and privilege to cast the events onto my tv, it’s really maddening and quite disheartening really. The sport makes an ungodly amount of money, especially from the American market, and yet all we are given in return is this buggy unreliable app that we pay a sizable sum to use. I’m forced to watch it on my tiny phone screen more than half the time because they seem to decide to either allow or prevent us from casting it onto our tv’s on a whim. Most of the time I’m watching it on 240p-540p max even with great internet connection. If I didn’t love this sport, I would have canceled this a long time ago. I think the suits in charge know this full well and rely on our love of the sport and lack of alternative access to it to justify both investing the bare minimum into the service and the refusal to make it any better. I wish I could share with you a photo of what it looks like when I cast it to my brand new Samsung OLED tv. It’s like the old distorted color bar screen of tvs of old. Remember those?

Airplay issues.

The first review listed indicated that Airplay issues were probably user error. As someone who did iOS support professionally for 8 years, I can guarantee you that the Airplay implementation in the F1 app is at fault. I have no other Airplay issues with other apps on any device I use. The F1 app Airplay may work for a practice session or qualifying but then the next video you watch will play on the iPhone or iPad but just spin when choosing AirPlay. Restarting the Apple TV will sometimes fix it. Restarting the phone or iPad typically does not. FWIW it seems to happen more often on the “International” feed (Sky Sports?) and more often on a race. Less so on qualifying. For the longest time I thought they were using a copy protection flag in the video to prevent Airplay for some races but now believe that it’s corrupted data that gets cached on the device. Force quiting the app doesn’t actually reset the app as it should so it’s a pain to get it to work.

The real solution is to switch to the F1 AppleTV app. I don’t know when they released this but it wasn’t there last year when I looked.
