T. Rex Live [The Dave Cash Collection]

As part of his live collection series, British radio personality Dave Cash has bequeathed evidence of Marc Bolan’s performing prowess with T. Rex Live. Opening with a near-nine-minute version of the band's best-known hit, “Get It On,” gives the listener a good sense that Bolan and company had a natural knack for tastefully vamping songs into extended jams without sounding overindulgent. This is followed by an even longer and sultrier version of T. Rex’s very first hit single, 1970's “Ride a White Swan”: considered by many rock historians to be the tune that birthed glam rock. Although the vocals on “Beltane Walk” are a bit light, this track is a reminder of Bolan’s guitar skills. A drop-dead gorgeous rendition of “Cosmic Dancer” is here stripped down to just guitar and singing for its first half. Bolan unleashes his wah-wah pedal on a closing cover of Eddie Cochran’s “Summertime Blues.”
