Psycho White - EP

Psycho White is the progeny of Blink 182 drummer Travis Barker and spitfire Alabama rapper Yelawolf, and this five-track debut EP exudes five distinct flavors of their rock-rap hybrid. That blend is a tricky workhorse, and extracting the most powerful essence of each genre isn't easy. Barker and Yelawolf nail it here, with Barker's rabid drumming a perfect complement to Yela's staccato, barbed delivery. "Push 'Em" pulses with a Rage Against the Machine–influenced heart when it's not hyperventilating Eminem-style. Yela manages to slow it down for the reggae slither of "6 Feet Underground," which features Tim Armstrong's warm, grizzled vocals. "Whistle Dixie" is a death rattle of a song, with flinty snares and distant church bells digging a dark hole for Yela's bilious pronouncements, while syncopated, guttural whup-whups are uttered by what sounds like Beelzebub. Also here are spastic Beastie Boys flourishes, horror-film narratives, eerie turntable howls courtesy of Mix Master Mike, and a number of other rewarding surprises.
