Through all her success, MaWhoo—one of amapiano’s flagship vocalists and songwriters— remains grounded in her outlook. In this EP, the Eshewo-born artist surrenders her life to the creator and her spiritual guides; her distinctive vocals carry messages of gratitude (“Emaweni”), reverence for people’s divine gifts (“Isiphiwo”) and resilience (“Qinisela”). She is joined in prayer by fellow KwaZulu-Natal singer Nkosazana Daughter on “Ukwamukela” and submits her soul to the creator on “Moya Wasemandulo”. The project is soulful, but doesn’t forget to fulfil amapiano’s duty to shake the dancefloor— the production starts off mellow on the X-Wise-produced “Emaweni” but builds up into bass-heavy thumpers (produced by the likes of Kabza De Small & DJ Maphorisa, OmiT ST and Tycoon) that are still reserved enough to accommodate the singer’s enchanting orisons. This is what magic indeed sounds like.
