Publisher Description

In the follow-up to her #1 bestselling memoir, A Stolen Life, Jaycee Dugard tells the story of her first experiences after years in captivity: the joys that accompanied her newfound freedom and the challenges of adjusting to life on her own.

When Jaycee Dugard was eleven years old, she was abducted from a school bus stop within sight of her home in South Lake Tahoe, California. She was missing for more than eighteen years, held captive by Philip and Nancy Garrido, and gave birth to two daughters during her imprisonment.

In A Stolen Life Jaycee told the story of her life from her abduction in 1991 through her reappearance in 2009. Freedom: My Book of Firsts is about everything that happened next.

“How do you rebuild a life?” Jaycee asks. In these pages, she describes the life she never thought she would live to see: from her first sight of her mother to her first time meeting her grownup sister, her first trip to the dentist to her daughters’ first day of school, her first taste of champagne to her first hangover, her first time behind the wheel to her first speeding ticket, and her first dance at a friend’s wedding to her first thoughts about the possibility of a future relationship.

This raw and inspiring book will remind you that there is, as Jaycee writes, “life after something tragic happens…Somehow, I still believe that we each hold the key to our own happiness and you have to grab it where you can in whatever form it might take.” Freedom is an awe-inspiring memoir about the power we all hold within ourselves.

Admire & Inspire

I read Jaycee's first book and couldn't understand where her strength came from. After reading this second book about now having and enjoying true freedom, I'm even more amazed at her positivity and faith even when it would be understandable if she was bitter.
The story is fascinating in itself but I recommend it for another reason: Because it will touch your soul and make you appreciative for what's truly important.

Great book. Abuse happened to me but not kidnapped.

I know a longtime friend of my dads who happened to be a doctor. His name is Larry Nassar. He gave my parents their first DVD player as a Christmas gift in 2001. When I was 1 1/2 my parents thought something was possibly wrong with me. They told that monster. Right after Beethoven Symphony of Fun came out on video and DVD, The Monster (Nassar) started feeding me lies like my parents are not worthy, that I can cheat and get away with it, the Brezner family were my birth parents when they are actually not and he told me for 13 years that my parents had adopted me, etc. He started traumatizing and sexually abusing me until a young woman named Ms. Maggie Nichols told me she was sexually abused for 3-4 years. This changed my mind and made me realize his true intentions. I helped her find a counselor while the police were investigating the Nassar case and if I didn’t help her, that Monster would be a free man and would still be abusing and feeding me lies today. Now that Nassar has his 60 years in prison back in mid 2018 and 40-175 year sentence in prison for abuse back in early 2019, I am free from this evil monster’s lies. Now I worry when I get married and have children that they will be kidnapped and/or sexually abused by someone they trust. I nowadays question if I should trust anyone. Nowadays I never thought I would be free from his delusional thinking, his teachings making me think that cheating and manipulating is ok. I also never thought I would end up dating 5 girls in high school. I never thought I would be driving or shopping at the mall after my virginity was robbed.

Amazing story of surviving

Jaycee, What a tremendous strength you have. Reading your book has opened my eyes to the horrors of the world but also the kindness as well.
