About AMM

British improvisational group AMM began in the 1960s as a loose ensemble of free-jazz musicians. They maintained a constantly evolving lineup, but members Eddie Prévost (drums), Keith Rowe (guitar), and Lou Gare (tenor saxophone) were the core. Their music had few similarities to American and European free jazz, yet it held the same tenets--total freedom in musical expression. Their first album, AMMMUSIC (1966), is a landmark example of noise-based improvisation, while 1968's THE CRYPT, an album marked by an immense hypnotic noise, assured the group's legendary status in the early experimental improv canon. By the 2000s, AMM dwindled into a core duo, while founding member Keith Rowe went on to work in electro-acoustic improvisation outside of the group.
