Vika & Linda

If Vika & Linda Bull weren’t household names in Australia when they released their 1994 self-titled debut album, their faces were familiar to anyone who’d seen The Black Sorrows live or on TV. Though they’d sung back-ups with Archie Roach, Paul Kelly and John Farnham, it was their turn on The Black Sorrows’ 1988 breakthrough album Hold On to Me—with Vika taking the lead on the hit “Chained to the Wheel”—that provided the springboard for the sisters’ career as a duo. They enlisted the talents of some of Australia’s premier songwriters on their first album: Hunters & Collectors’ Mark Seymour (“When Will You Fall For Me”), Stephen Cummings (“The Blue Hour”), Joe Camilleri (“Sacred Things”) and Paul Kelly, who co-produced the album and co-wrote several tracks (including the playful “I Know Where To Go To Feel Good”, which features Iggy Pop on backing vocals). The album may shift between island reggae (“These Hands”), acoustic blues and roots (“Hard Love”) and guitar pop (“When Will You Fall For Me”), but the sisters’ powerful voices and sweet harmonies stamp a singular identity over the entire piece.
