Sweet Tea

Sweet Tea

Although 1991's Damn Right, I've Got the Blues reignited Guy's star, it was fading again by this 2001 tribute to the late Junior Kimbrough and the contemporary Mississippi hill country juke joint sound. "I wondered what in the hell kind of blues is this?" Guy has said about the material he was given by producer Dennis Herring to record for Sweet Tea. But Guy lashed his improvisational technique and rumbling overdriven vintage amplifiers to songs like Kimbrough's "Done Got Old" and "Baby Please Don't Leave Me," overcoming his unfamiliarity with this crude, propulsive music to create a modern electric blues masterpiece. Guy hits unpredictable peaks as he explores this material, playing as if his creative life depended on it. Which it did. The resulting wave of praise and attention helped keep his touring career afloat and contributed momentum to his overdue 2005 induction into the Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame.
