Body & Soul

Body & Soul

Recorded while Jenny Morris was touring America with INXS, “You’re Gonna Get Hurt” is the plucky centerpiece of the Kiwi pop/soul vocalist’s 1987 solo debut. Penned by INXS’s Andrew Farriss, it’s just one example of how Morris used her lengthy experience in the Aotearoa New Zealand and Australian music industries to build a strong repertoire of contributors. Since moving to Sydney in 1981 as the frontwoman for New Wave outfit The Crocodiles, she had formed and disbanded the trio QED and worked as a session backing vocalist for a range of groups—not to mention on a sneaky cover of Nancy Sinatra and Lee Hazlewood's “Jackson” with INXS singer Michael Hutchence. The personnel list on Body & Soul is a who’s who of contemporary players (Ian Moss, Amanda Vincent, and Dave Dobbyn), while songwriters include fellow Aotearoa New Zealanders Tim and Neil Finn, who contributed two separate tracks. Love, loss, and letting go are the themes stamped on this ARIA-winning collection, which imprinted Morris’ unmistakable voice on the Aussie canon. From here, she would remain a chart stalwart into the ’90s with songs like “Break In the Weather” and “She Has to Be Loved.”
