About Six Feet Under

Six Feet Under are a cornerstone band of the vibrant Florida death-metal scene. The group came together in 1993 as the side-project union of two metal-scene veterans—Cannibal Corpse vocalist Chris Barnes and Obituary guitarist Allen West—and several other musicians. Their 1995 debut album, Haunted, set their sonic blueprint, combining gouging grooves, wicked metal riffs, and Barnes’ hellmouth vocals. Barnes departed Cannibal Corpse at that point to focus on Six Feet Under; however, West left Six Feet Under after the 1997 release of Warpath. These changes contributed to a heavier and more extreme sound on 1999’s Maximum Violence and ushered in periods of experimentation. The band released a 2000 covers album, Graveyard Classics, which featured their takes on Dead Kennedys and AC/DC; enlisted rapper Ice-T for 2001’s “One Bullet Left”; and demonstrated a more streamlined (but no less aggressive) sound on the 2003 album Bringer of Blood. With Barnes as the lone original member, Six Feet Under have spent the years since cementing their legacy by continuing to push death metal’s boundaries, as heard on the 2017 sludgy thrash epic Torment.
