Over the Rhine

About Over the Rhine

Over the Rhine’s lush, pop-leaning Americana has endured since their formation in 1989. The band’s core duo—singer/guitarist Karin Bergquist and bassist/pianist Linford Detweiler (married in 1996)—met as music students at Ohio’s Malone University. They released their full-length debut, Till We Have Faces, in 1991, forming a rough blueprint for the decades to come with a mix of poetic lyricism and loose rootsiness on songs like “Eyes Wide Open.” While Patience (1992) and Eve (1994) largely followed suit, their two 1996 albums, Good Dog Bad Dog and Christmas record The Darkest Night of the Year, are slightly more somber affairs. In 2003, they paid tribute to their geographical roots with the double album Ohio. They teamed up with songwriter and Grammy-winning producer Joe Henry for 2011’s atmospheric The Long Surrender and 2013’s sprawling Meet Me At the Edge of the World. In 2019, they celebrated 30 years of making music with the lived-in folk of Love & Revelation, showing no signs of slowing down.
