About Asphalt Ballet

Hailing from San Diego, CA, the hard rock quintet Asphalt Ballet specialized in the melodic yet tough sounds of Mötley Crüe and Guns N' Roses, but made the unfortunate mistake of crashing the scene just as the musical style was on its way out (circa the early '90s). The group consisted of Gary Jefferies (ex-Broken Rule, vocals), and former Mistreated members Danny Clarke (guitar), Julius J. Ulrich (guitar), Terry Phillips (bass), and Mikki Kiner (drums). They built a substantial following on the Sunset Strip in Los Angeles, resulting in a record deal with Virgin, who issued their self-titled debut in 1991. Capitol issued their sophomore release two years later, Pigs, for which Jefferies was replaced with newcomer Tommy Dean. But like its predecessor, Pigs fell on deaf ears, resulting in Asphalt Ballet's split shortly thereafter (Jefferies would resurface with Southern rockers the Regulators and later Alligator Stew, while Ulrich and Kiner worked together in the hardcore metal band 13a). ~ Greg Prato
