Description

The proven original.

System Monitor is an application for the menu bar of your Mac, designed to inform you unobtrusively about the activity of your computer. You can retrieve up-to-date technical data any time, like process load, main memory consumption, storage space, disk activity, communication on network interfaces, etc. By positioning the app in the menu bar, as least screen real estate as possible will be wasted. The program monitors your system continuously and is readily available when you need it.

If desired, System Monitor can also simulate the flickering activity lights of hard drives or network sockets in the menu bar. This is possible either in color or —perfectly integrated into the design of the operating system— in inconspicuous black-and-white. PC switchers who miss this feature on Macintosh computers can easily retrofit this function with System Monitor.

What’s New

Version 6.1

- Added new layout option for the menu bar to suppress labels in small two-line display items. This can further reduce the necessary widths on small screens.
- Added workaround for an issue of macOS 14 Sonoma where the operating system could prevent that the current status of individual IPv6 addresses is shown as help tags (tool tips).
- The preference pane to control layout settings for menu-bar items was redesigned.
- Better help tags for the available menu-bar items of the processor load section.
- Fixed a problem where a misleading "less than or equal" symbol could be shown for the temperature readings of inactive CPU cores of M3 Pro or M3 Max processors when they entered a special power-saving mode.

It looks like crap, but does the job

Seriously, would it kill them to design a good looking trey icons and a decent menu? It's cluttered and ugly. But it's very accurate and actually works, unlike some of the other solutions I tried, so I guess I'll give it 4 stars.

Version 5.0 - must visit Developer's website to keep T monitoring

I have depended on the this app to watch my Macs for overheating & throttling for many years. I was surprised when it updated to V5.0 and the temperature monitoring vanished. If you open the prefs pane, you can discover the instructions to restore that function. You have to visit Marcel's website and follow the instructions. Apparently, Apple forced him into this workaround. I can't think of a legitmate reason for Apple to block the user from monitoring the computer's temperature. The fix works just fine, though, now. This is the best monitoring app that I have found: Recommended.

Pretty good program, pretty bad support.

I got the trial version, and liked it. So I bought the paid version and installed it. Unfortunately, BOTH versions continued to run, even after I uninstalled it. I reached out to support, but they were of no help at all (and frankly, they were quite rude). After weeks of them sending instructions that were totally invalide, I finally I just uniinstalled both versions and reinstalled the paid version, and now it’s working (no thanks to the support team).
