Sue Saad & the Next

Sue Saad & the Next

Though this album only reached No. 131 on the Billboard 200 album chart in the U.S. and was the band's only full-length release, its music was used prominently in movies such as 1980's Roadie, 1981's Looker, and 1985's Radioactive Dreams. The group's key members—Sue Saad, drummer James Lance, and guitarist "Tony" Lloyd Riparetti—met in junior high and spent time in the group Calliope before settling in as a new wave band that signed to producer Richard Perry's label Planet Records in late 1979. This album was recorded on the cheap for $50,000, with Perry and Lance handling production duties. The result is an album that symbolizes 1980 and the surrounding era like no other. "Young Girl" is new wave reggae with solid crystalline guitar lines. "Your Lips-Hands-Kiss-Love" captures a tight studio funk. "I Want Him" couldn't be more direct pop if The Knack had written it. "Cold Night Rain" is an early example of the power ballad. Bonus tracks include "Looker" and "Radioactive Dreams."
