On her 13th album, the California native weaves elements of sonic intrigue through her stripped-back indie pop, playfully rearranging genre tropes with an effortless minimalism that nods to her songwriting prowess. She’s flirtatious and mischievous on the understated title track, gutsy and scrappy on the riotous “My Career in Chemistry,” but it’s the twanging, distorted guitars and ferocious, storming percussion that really set the tone here. “Shake It Down” is almost feverish in its brooding intensity and “Under the Night” shows off her smoky, sultry side.
