Featuring the father-son team of Billy Joe and Eddy Shaver, Shaver released five studio albums between 1993 and 2000. The band's run came to an abrupt end when son Eddy died. Starting in the ‘70s, Billy Joe had written a number of classic outlaw country songs that were recorded by the likes of Kris Kristofferson and Willie Nelson. Eddy was a hired gun who played guitar with Nelson, Dwight Yoakum, and others starting in the ‘80s. The younger Shaver brought a hard edge to his father’s songs, rendering a definitive version of the already-classic “Georgia on a Fast Train.” Elsewhere he flies on “The Earth Rolls On” and “Tramp on Your Street,” a classic ballad written in the ‘70s. Billy Joe is known as a hard-living guy, both for his hardscrabble upbringing and his restless spirit, and his vocal delivery gives authenticity to songs like “Highway of Life,” “Restless Wind," and “Blood Is Thicker Than Water.” Suffice to say, the material on this greatest-hits package easily stands the test of time.
