Shooting Range, Pt. 5

Shooting Range, Pt. 5

It seems like Messy Marv puts out a new project every other week, but despite his breakneck pace and tireless work ethic, he always comes correct. Repping for the Bay, San Fran, and specifically the Fillmore District, Marv has put in work since the mid-‘90s, successfully weathering changing trends, jail bids, and other assorted dramas. For the latest edition of his long-running Shooting Range series, he enlists a small army of likeminded emcees such as J Pistol (on the super-smooth "Hella Sh*t"), West Craven (who contributes the bass-heavy burner "Rep My Code"), Hot Boy Hoffa (on the undeniable club hit "Get Cha Issue"), and Killa Kiese (with the ominous, organ-laced "Go Hard"). Marv does his own thing on the first three tracks, especially impressing on the chilled-out opener, "Hittin Me Up." But as with most of his mixtapes, it's primarily a Bay-centric compilation that gives shine to promising younger artists on the come-up.
