Pieces of Me

Pieces of Me

Ledisi Young sure has come a long way since her weekly residencies at San Francisco’s quaint subterranean venue Café du Nord. Following the GRAMMY®-nominated Turn It Loose from 2009, her fifth studio album Pieces of Me gets busy with R&B luminaries Ivan Barias, Carvin Haggins and Rex Rideout as well as studio guns Mike City, Chuck Harmony and Salaam Remi. The title-track ballad opens with a spray of wind chimes before Ledisi comes in crooning soulfully about the pangs of fame. She fawns over a new lover on the mellow groove of “So Into You,” before serving up the retro “Coffee.” Jaheim (the grandson of ‘60s soul singer Hoagy Lands) lends his throaty vocals on the arresting duet “Stay Together.” Originally from New Orleans, Ledisi harkens back to her Louisiana roots on the simmering Southern soul ballad “Hate Me” – contrasting emotional tension with her soaring inflections on one of the album’s standout tracks.
