Director Nigel Cole’s romantic comedy plays like an MTV-inspired daydream, a sometimes bittersweet tale that follows stars Ashton Kutcher and Amanda Peet through a series of flirtations and casual sexual encounters as it wends its way to a formulaic Hollywood ending. The film’s more melancholy moments are shaded by the stark R&B of Groove Armada’s “Hands of Time” and the soul-charged “Trouble” by Ray Montagne, a mood that finds some sunny contrast via Aqualung’s “Brighter Than Sunshine,” “Butch Walker’s “Maybe It’s Just Me,” and the power- pop charm of “Know Nothing” by Travis. The soundtrack also echoes the film’s time frame with such infectious ‘90s rock chestnuts as Smash Mouth’s resilient charmer “Walking on the Sun,” the upbeat “Semi-Charmed Life” by Third Eye Blind, and Eagle-Eye Cherry’s “Save Tonight.”
