Nilotic - EP

Nilotic - EP

The debut EP from Nairobi-born, Adelaide-based artist Elsy Wameyo speaks to her journey of walking between two cultures, all the while grappling with the ever-changing state of the world she lives in. Inspired by her background—the Nilotic tribes of Kenya—and informed by her upbringing and current life in Adelaide, South Australia, Elsy uses music as therapy and as a way of channeling feelings of hurt, frustration, and, moreover, her unshakable faith through sound. Choral chants meet rumbling bass melodies—a fusion of ancient and contemporary, as Elsy presents a spirited delivery inspired by the beginning of the Nilotes journey and, ultimately, what it means to be a Nilot in 2022. Opening track “River Nile” is an easy standout, with Wameyo finding her power early and setting the tone for an immersive EP. The self-produced project sees Wameyo stepping into the spotlight, joining a powerful wave of African-born artists changing the Australian hip-hop landscape. Her voice deftly moves between soulful and hypnotic (“Hunger”), while also harnessing ferocity as a rapper with something to say (“Nilotic”). Tracks like “Promise” and “Sulwe” expand on the softer musical ideas throughout, incorporating elements of jazz, soul, and funk in a way that elevates the overall output. Bold horns weave beautifully with guitar and percussion on “Sulwe,” buoying Elsy’s Swahili lyrics.
