Moonlight Revival

Moonlight Revival

Atlanta-based Ponderosa’s debut album is the sound of assured Southern-rock musicians working their way through the varieties of the genre. The album opener, “Old Gin Road,” sets the tone with its confident vocals from Kalen Nash and the guitars of Nash and Kris Sampson combining with notable firepower. The band emulates early-‘70s hard rock with the slow, intense churn of “Hold On You.” “Little Runaway” sounds like Chris Isaak and Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers rummaging down the backstreets of the ‘70s. “Pretty People” pulls up a Rolling Stones riff with some extra piano pounding on the back end. “Girl I’ve Ever Seen” is a midnight ballad worth its weight in roses. “Revolution” kicks up a boogie fire. “Penniless” throws a sly bluegrass touch to its attack. The harmonies are evocative of ‘70s country-rock radio and the band can slip through so many modes that it’s difficult to call this band’s strengths any one particular style. For the crushing hard rock of “Devil On My Shoulder” is every bit as convincing as the soul groove of “I Don’t Mind.”
