Early in his career, Chet Baker was one of the coolest cats around, with the trademark seductive trumpet tone he brought to ballads like "My Funny Valentine." His playful, downright flirtatious singing on standards like "Old Devil Moon" and "Do It the Hard Way" was equally charming. But by the end of his carefree mid-'50s era, a stronger sense of melancholy tinged Baker's playing. On a somber 1958 duet, he and guitarist Kenny Burrell get to the world-weary heart of Kurt Weill's "September Song."
