Brazil Classics 1: Beleza Tropical

Compiled by David Byrne as he was delving into two decades' worth of MPB and Tropicália releases, this is an ideal introduction to one of the most thrilling periods in Brazil's popular music scene. These 18 tracks focus on immediately accessible tunes like Chico Buarque's jazzy flute-and-percussion workout "Caçada" and Gal Costa and Maria Bethânia's playful duet "Sonho Meu." Elsewhere, Lô Borges' shimmering, Beatlesque "Equatorial" and Caetano Veloso's bass-driven "Fio Maravilha" (a shout-out to a beloved footballer) show how Brazilian artists incorporated rock influences.
