Before Lately

Louisville, Kentucky singer-songwriter Cheyenne Marie Mize, who has worked with Bonnie “Prince” Billy, is a captivating writer in the vein of Cat Power, Edith Frost, and other indie musicians who dig the slowness. Her leisurely walk through the galaxies pokes a great hole into “Waiting,” where time ticks away as she assembles her guitar chords. “Kind” trips out with a slew of vocal tracks vying for attention like the old-time Roches. “Not” moves over to the piano for a little sitting room contemplation. “Path” adds some warmly amplified guitars that threaten a psychedelic takeover at any point. “Friend” sashays through the fields with Mize singing at the most fragile end of her range, picking apart notes with the expertise of a scientist. “With(Out),” with its extra layers of vocals, passes for a ‘60s pop number. “Doctor” is an upbeat piano tune by comparison where Mize seizes control and proves she can do anything she puts her voice to.
