I Still Play
Here’s a wonderfully affectionate tribute to the man who steered the Nonesuch label for 32 years, Bob Hurwitz. Eleven composers contributed new pieces—pithy, witty, and ingenious—and four pianists (including two of those composers) play them. It’s a roll call of many of the musicians, now household names and invariably occupying the spaces between genres, who were championed early on by Nonesuch. Steve Reich, Philip Glass, John Adams, and Randy Newman are the big American names, with Louis Andriessen flying the European flag, while Nico Muhly and Timo Andres—who’s also one of the pianists—represent a new generation. A splendidly varied and enchanting collection.
