The scrappy, New York–based Fania Records brought Latin music roaring into joyous and untidy collision with the flourishing late-'60s counterculture. While the era's other equally excellent Latin imprints—like Tico and Alegre—clung to the detached, studiously cool aesthetic of the early ‘60s, Fania was quick to embrace the pulsating clamor of the psychedelic era. The Fania All-Stars were an ever-changing aggregation of the label’s hottest singers and instrumentalists, becoming Fania’s chief emissaries to the counterculture and the American mainstream at large. The All-Stars were renowned for their furious live performances and often graced stages in venues not normally associated with salsa music, starting with their seminal date at Greenwich Village’s Red Garter club in 1968 and peaking with their 1973 and 1975 performances at Yankee Stadium. This 20-track collection includes an assortment of live and studio cuts spanning 1968 to 1994. It emphasizes the group’s frenetic live recordings from the late ‘60s and early ‘70s, where the joyous intensity fostered Fania’s remarkable crossover success during this era.
