Utopia

The title of 360’s third album must surely be aspirational, for many of its lyrics come from a time in the rapper’s life that can only be described as hellish. Having emerged from an addiction to painkillers, 360’s commitment to embracing sobriety informs songs such as “Must Come Down” (feat. PEZ) and “You and I.” The downside of fame is also a recurring theme—whether addressing accusations of being a sellout in “Still Rap” or coming to terms with the myriad hangers-on who tried to take advantage of him in “Price of Fame” (feat. Gossling)—as is depression and surviving mental illness (“By All Means” and “Spiral Down”). It’s not all serious—“Sixavelli” (feat. Lunar C) and the Southern hip-hop inspired “Speed Limit” find the artist born Matt Colwell indulging his lighter side, the former featuring nonsensical lyrics such as “Last week I bought a Nixon mask/Stole Bill Clinton’s car and drove it into Monica Lewinsky’s spa.” Such jocularity is a far cry from “It’s All About to End” (feat. Daniel Johns), a bruising take on the perils of organized religion.
