When Sweet Sleep Returned

When Sweet Sleep Returned

With their second studio album, San Francisco’s Assemble Head In Sunburst Sound dodged the sophomore slump. 2009’s When Sweet Sleep Returned is still heavily marinated in the lysergic trappings of The City’s bygone ballroom psychedelia, but starting with the well crafted “Two Stage Rocket,” it’s evident that extensive touring between albums let the band’s chemistry blossom enough for them to put their fresh footprint on a tried-and-true template. “Two Birds” even resonates with a sunny psychedelia similar to what L.A. canyon-rockers Beachwood Sparks were doing back when they were a septet pumping out seven inches for Sub Pop. “The Slumbering Ones” oozes a darkened faraway cool that sounds like what might have gone down had Charlie Manson hung out with Dennis Wilson just a little longer. And if the Stones-worshipping members of the Brian Jonestown Massacre had instead named themselves the Last Train To Gene Clarksville, they could have birthed the jangling “Kolob Canyon.” “By the Rippling Green” is an infectious slice of melodic acid-rock and the album’s centerpiece.
