Live In Las Vegas

Dave Matthews is one of those performers who often reworks his material onstage. Fans have come to expect some radical transformations and this collection, recorded with long-time collaborator Tim Reynolds, does not disappoint. Recorded at Planet Hollywood’s Theater for the Performing Arts, Live In Las Vegas expands on songs from every aspect of his career. “Dancing Nancies” and “Typical Situation” from his major label debut, Under the Table and Dreaming, come across beautifully in these smaller arrangements. Despite the absence of his full band, Matthews, with Reynolds’ help, capably fills the space with dazzling instrumentation that only misses the band’s rhythmic attack — and even that is willfully sacrificed for the intricate weaving acoustics of “Squirm.” (Many tracks are from Matthews’ last DMB album, Big Whiskey and the GrooGrux King.) The acoustic instrumental version of Led Zeppelin’s “Kashmir” is admirable.
