After two consecutive hit albums, Triumph earned the right to handle their own production duties for the 1980 album Progressions of Power. While “I Can Survive” is the biggest, brightest, and most sugary pop song this hard rock band ever wrote, their self-produced effort was on the whole a much grittier affair than previous efforts. “I Live for the Weekend” is wonderfully raw and reckless, while “Woman in Love,” “Tear the Roof Off,” and “Hard Road” boast a sound that's gloriously rough and unfastened and makes their previous efforts seem overly polished in comparison. While Triumph were getting rougher and more intense, they were also getting more sensitive. “Take My Heart” is a tender, almost jazzy power ballad, while the instrumental “Finger Talkin’” shows Rik Emmett’s affinity for classical guitar techniques. The two sides of the band’s personality merge on “In the Night,” a slow-burning sleeper hit that's at once murky and majestic, tender and menacing.
