A stubbornly eclectic artist since he began recording a half century ago, Shawn Phillips makes music that blurs the boundaries between folk, classical, and progressive rock in fascinating ways. Infinity (recorded in 1989 but unreleased until 2014) finds him experimenting with the Infinity Device, a system of analog synthesizers and drum modules. Phillips shifts from the ‘80s-style techno-pop of “Crown of Love” and “Money Dance” to the acoustic-centered balladry of “I Will Never Leave” and the smoldering instrumental rock of the title track with ease, reaffirming his stature as a musician of formidable range and imagination.
