Legrand Affair

Legrand Affair

Broadway songstress Melissa Errico pays homage to legendary film composer Michel Legrand on this sumptuously recorded set. Many of these songs—arranged and conducted by Legrand and performed by the 100-piece Brussels Philharmonic–are taken from classic films of the ‘60s and ‘70s and evoke a long-lost era of sophisticated passion. Surrounded by billowing orchestrations, Errico fills such familiar tunes as “The Windmills of Your Mind,” “I Will Wait for You,” and “What Are You Doing the Rest of Your Life?” with palpable feeling, exploring the poetic nuances of each lyric. Her version of “The Summer Knows” (the end-title theme from Summer of ‘42) lets her shine in an especially seductive performance. The album digs deep into Legrand’s catalog to reinterpret evergreen numbers like the haunting “Martina,” the starry-eyed “I Was Born to Love You,” and the bittersweet “Once Upon a Summertime.” Producer Phil Ramone does justice to both the richness of Legrand’s music and the intimate, caressing qualities of Errico’s voice.
