In the late ‘90s, a young Fabienne Delsol moved from Limoges, France to London, following her instincts and her passion for ‘60s Serge Gainsbourg-influenced pop. Delsol’s eventual band, the Bristols, released two albums and a handful of singles of beautifully produced, vintage-flavored garage/beat tunes in their brief career. Delsol’s voice is straight out of the era, sexy and alluring, rich with reverb and youthful exuberance, and with outstanding musicians from bands the Headcoats/Milkshakes and the Graham Coxon Band, fans of the genre thought they’d died and gone to heaven. After calling it quits in 2003, Delsol continued her career, but for new fans of the Bristols, this collection — pulling from both albums and the singles — is a wonderful introduction and a solid memento. Tracks like “Hanging On a String” (their 7” cover of Question Mark & The Mysterians), “I’m Not a Bad Girl” and “Our Love Will Still Be There” showcase the Joe Meek-inspired recording methods (vintage instruments, analog studio equipment), and songs like “Baby I Got News for You” and “Baby Gene” offer up enough garage-y guitars to keep rockers bopping alongside mod/pop fans.
