Although Christian pop pioneer Amy Grant’s How Mercy Looks From Here contains contributions from a batch of big-name guest stars including Sheryl Crow, James Taylor, Carole King, and husband Vince Gill, it’s not some showy, all-star attention grab. The album is full of thoughtful tunes that display both the songwriter’s commitment to faith and her understanding of its complexity. While the anthemic production on opening track “If I Could See (What the Angels See)” and penultimate cut “Free” evokes the latter-day grandeur of U2, there are frequent flashes of folk, pop, and country throughout the album. Still, How Mercy Looks From Here has its most heartfelt moments during lovingly crafted ballads like "Don't Try So Hard."
