Ollabelle

Ollabelle

An intriguingly named roots outfit based in New York's East Village, Ollabelle debuted with this self-titled album for T-Bone Burnett's DMZ label. Often subterranean in feel, the six-piece pick up on some of the same elements of "old, weird America" that the White Stripes have also borrowed ("John the Revelator"). While often rooted in old-time gospel music, the group makes a spooky left turn into the Rolling Stones' catalog with the Aftermath ballad "I Am Waiting." Like singer Amy Helm's father Levon of The Band, these people are interested in making something new out of old traditions without erasing their previous impact. Oh, and the name? Fittingly, it comes from obscure country artist Ola Belle Reed - just the type of musician Burnett's O Brother, Where Art Thou?soundtrack helped bring to wider acclaim.
