Stills

Colorado's Gauntlet Hair relocated to Chicago only to record Stills in Portland, Ore., with Jacob Portrait (Unknown Mortal Orchestra) at The Cave, where everyone gets completely unhinged. Comparisons to '80s post-punk and pop music are somewhat misleading, considering the two styles rarely met in real time and the pop hooks here likely won't strike anyone as having commercial potential. Here, it's all about the aggression. Serious music fans will likely find much to unravel in the bold approach of "Heave" and the vocals-from-the-catacombs vibe of "G.I.D.," for starters. Even "Human Nature," the opening track and first single, could hardly be confused for the works of White Zombie or Marilyn Manson, despite being two of the record's stated influences, according to drummer Craig Nice. Chaotic tracks like "Spew" and "Obey Me" sound more like millennial updates of NYC's No Wave scene: loud, demanding, and determined to exist on their own terms.
