New England

Although produced by Paul Stanley of Kiss and Mike Stone (who'd produced Journey), this overlooked 1979 gem of hard-rock pop was a lot closer in sound to Electric Light Orchestra, Cheap Trick, and mid-period Queen. The monster should’ve–been–No. 1 singles “Don’t Ever Wanna Lose Ya” and “Hello, Hello, Hello” stand as two of the greatest rock-pop sides of the ’70s. All the songs are compact yet tricky; the guitars crunch and sting while the harmonies and keyboards give a sense of air and the strings soar. Singer John Fannon sounds like cross between Ian Hunter and Jeff Lynne. It’s stunning debut from a nearly forgotten Boston band.
