With a celebrated discography some four decades deep, Juan Luis Guerra has little reason not to play around. Loosely if cleverly framed as a radio station broadcast, this six-song EP diverts from the acoustic reworks of 2020’s Privé to explore a number of different sounds. Befitting his tropical music legacy, he introduces uptempo numbers “Cómo Me Enamora” and “La Noviecita” to balance breezier moments like “Cositas de Amor” and “DJ Bachata.” Even amid the sonic diversity and subtleties present throughout Radio Güira, opener “MAMBO 23” lingers in the mind for its contemporary dembow nod that bridges generations of Dominican music history.
