Coastlines

Coastlines

Formed with a handful of Detroit musicians from bands like garage rockers The Von Bondies and more experimental outfits like Javelins and Child Bite, the bucking, frolicking FAWN is aptly named. The energetic fusion of each member's past lives has produced an interesting amalgam of sounds that are surprisingly pop-centric. Alicia Gbur (singer for The Nice Device and contributor to The Von Bondies) brings her excellent vocals to the party, and the tight, melodic songs on Coastlines recall other frothy-yet-muscular pop outfits like The Joy Formidable and Imperial Teen. “All the Lights” opens the collection with the sort of guitar wind-up that propelled the best Who songs decades back, and the record closes with the furious, punk-fueled “Cobra on the Beach.” In between, there are plenty of gems where bobbing, swooping guitar lines and Gbur’s vocals make the most delicious rhythmic tapestries; singing along is pretty much mandatory. It's pure-pop yumminess with just enough pepper in the mix.
