Black & White in Dub

Black & White in Dub

Black and White in Dub is a crucial set of stripped down rhythms and dubs from one of the pioneers of the form. Carlton Patterson ran his small Black and White imprint out of downtown Kingston, and though he lacked the commercial muscle to compete with such musical powerhouses as Coxsone Dodd’s Studio One or Duke Reid’s Channel One, his productions were never less than impeccable exercises in classic roots and his musical collaborators were first class, as is evidenced by the presence of King Tubby’s name on this release. King Tubby adds his jaw-dropping, psychedelicized production touches to nearly every track here (the exception being the Prince Jammy produced “Disco Style”), and it’s a pleasure to hear the dub master turn tracks like the gently lilting “Watchman Dub” into solemn meditations on the power of minimalism in production. Truly, these bare bones dubs are possessed of a sense of sculptural elegance that can only be found on a handful of other Tubby productions, such as the legendary Meets The Rockers Uptown. The folks over at English reissue label Pressure Sounds have outdone themselves once again by uncovering this long forgotten masterpiece; Reggae fanatics take note.
