Floating

Floating

Recording under the moniker Sleep Party People, Brian Batz manipulates tones and textures to create soundscapes at once appealing and eerie. His command of pop form and puckish sense of humor make Floating an airy sonic confection with a darkly delicious center. On this sophomore album, the Danish-born Batz broadens his aural vision with the help of producers Jeff Saltzman and Mikael Johnston, who nudge his music slightly toward the mainstream. The result is a song collection that suggests influences as disparate as My Bloody Valentine, The Cure, Owl City, and David Lynch. Transcending these reference points, Batz fully indulges his quirks and obsessions as he matches a love for buoyant faux-innocent melodies with playfully morbid lyrics that tickle and unsettle simultaneously. His distorted vocals, insistent rhythms, and shimmering synth layers give “In Another World,” “Floating Blood of Mine," and similar tracks the quality of lucid dreams. Batz dips into ‘80s-era techno (“Death Is the Future”), skirts industrial zones (“A Stranger Among Us”), and invokes old-time parlor music (“Only a Shadow”) as the mood strikes him.
