Bassist Christian McBride vividly adopted the sound of big-band jazz on The Good Feeling. He wrote six of the 11 pieces and crafted meticulous arrangements, combining classic ‘50s modes with the extended harmonies and rhythms of contemporary jazz orchestras. His exceptionally polished band includes trumpeter Nicholas Payton, trombonist Steve Davis, and reedists Steve Wilson and Ron Blake. There’s a vintage silkiness to strutting, elegantly swinging “Broadway,” but things shake up on his soul-stoked original “Brother Mister,” infused with Herbie Hancock-style swag.
