Songs From the Movie

An 2012 inductee to the Songwriters Hall of Fame, Mary Chapin Carpenter revisits 10 of her personal favorite songs and has GRAMMY®-winning arranger Vince Mendoza orchestrate them with a 63-piece orchestra, a 15-voice choir, and select high-caliber session musicians for the aptly titled Songs from the Movie. Carpenter has never fit comfortably into any particular genre. She’s been lumped into country music, but her own sophistication often makes adult-contemporary folk as obvious a choice. It’s fitting that now such well-known (but not overexposed) Carpenter tunes as “Only a Dream,” “I Am a Town," and “Come On Come On” are given the wider cinemascope sound that one could imagine for a voice that’s always played it relatively low-key. As the album title suggests, the songs are arranged to sound as if they’d appeared in films, with their tasteful, never overdone orchestral instrumentation casting them as timeless pieces no longer chained to their original settings or circumstances.
