The Jacksons - Number 1's

The Jacksons - Number 1's

The Jackson 5’s reputation as Motown princes is largely based on these ten songs (Jermaine’s 1979 boogie hit “Let’s Get Serious” is included here only as filler). Though marketed to teenyboppers, the Jacksons exhibited a surprising range during their time with Motown. They shifted from the dreamy smooth soul of “Never Can Say Goodbye” and “Got to Be There,” to the kiddie pop of “Rockin’ Robin,” and the tender ballad “Ben,” Michael’s first solo hit. Nevertheless, there’s no disputing that the group’s first four singles form the golden ticket that made them immortal. “I Want You Back,” “ABC,” “The Love You Save,” and “I’ll Be There” represent the group’s commercial and artistic peak. Written and produced by Motown brain trust The Corporation, these four songs are paragons of the late ‘60s Motown sound. They are more than kids’ songs — like the best of Motown, or even the Beatles, these tunes are guaranteed to impart elation to people of all ages for as long as pop music lives.
