After working with hordes of rock, R&B, jazz, and hip-hop stars, drummer Jaimeo Brown and guitarist/producer Chris Sholar create a strikingly singular amalgam of all those styles and more. Several tracks, like “Hidden Angel” and “Be So Glad,” incorporate samples from field recordings of old work songs, and build up stormy modern-jazz atmospheres as Brown’s roiling percussion leads the horn section on a wild chase. The heavy rock riffs of “For Mama Lucy” and the stomping blues of “Mississippi” also hint at how many other directions JBT are capable of taking.
