Untamed Beast

Untamed Beast

On the hard stereo mix of "Party Kids"—with Sallie Ford's swaggering vocals in one channel with the bass and drums, and Jeffrey Munger scrambling together tough, reverbed guitar in the other—Sallie Ford & The Sound Outside are doing for rockabilly and garage rock what Brittany Howard and Alabama Shakes are doing for blues and soul. Based in Portland, Ore., Ford calls up her Asheville, N.C., roots for the tough American strut of "Bad Boys," where she sounds like Them-era Van Morrison or The Animals' Eric Burdon ready to cut the competition down to size. "Shivers" starts with Ford Tennis' drums ticking off the time before Tyler Tornfelt's bass follows Ford's rapid-fire delivery; the fiery ballad touches on the sounds of the primitive '60s with just enough of an update to make it current. This is a band in the best sense of the word, with each member adding to something together far beyond themselves. "Devil" throws in a "Lust for Life"–like ramble-tamble for maximum party effect.
