EPISODE 2
A Safe Place to Shoot Up
2/19/08 The city of Vancouver boasts that it’s one of the richest cities in North America, but take a wrong turn and you’ll find yourself in the “Downtown Eastside,” the single poorest neighborhood in Canada and one of the roughest areas in all of North America. One in three residents is HIV positive and the rate of Hepatitis C is 70 percent. Dan Rather Reports investigates Vancouver’s controversial experiment to reduce the spread of disease caused by addicts shooting up with contaminated needles. As part of a new plan drug addicts are now not only allowed, but encouraged, to shoot up in the safety of government-sponsored clinics. And, in the wake of the disputed 2000 Presidential election that saw Florida's hanging chads at center stage, states across the country spent billions of federal tax dollars trying to solve - once and for all - the voting problem. Many states bought touch-screen machines, but are now having buyer's remorse – and once again tax payers are footing the bill.
