Something Wicked (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack)

Director Darin Scott’s indie psychological thriller (featuring Brittany Murphy’s final role) is driven by an ambitiously crafted suspense that fairly begs comparisons with Hitchcock and De Palma, despite its modest means. But while widely experienced young composer Kyle Newmaster is clearly familiar with that sacred musical ground, he approaches it with a more modern sense of rhythm and texture. “I really enjoy writing tense, dark orchestral music and combining it with other sounds and elements,” says the veteran game and TV scorer. “I did quite a bit of recording with live orchestral musicians in which we recorded a variety of textural and [chance] sounds.” Newmaster cites the track “Serious Breakdown” as a particular favorite, “a cue that starts very haunting and tense and then builds up to a moment where the audience might sense something terrible is going to happen. But it makes a very quick transition from horror to sadness as an element about one of the characters is revealed. I really enjoy scoring scenes that require that kind of musical complexity and depth.”
